Australian Architectural Billings Index

Introducing The Australian Architectural Billings Index; a quarterly industry report conducted by Office D.SHARP to assess current business conditions in the Australian architecture industry.

INTRODUCTION

Inspired by the American Institute of Architects ’Work-on-the-Boards survey, which has been conducted monthly since 1995, the AABI provides a comprehensive overview of the Australian architectural business landscape.

169 practices have contributed their sales and financial data for the three months ending June 30, 2024. Each practice has been asked whether conditions improved, worsened or stayed the same compared to the previous quarter.

Download the full report for April to June 2024 HERE.

The next survey will be conducted October 1st. If you are the owner of a registered architecture practice and are interested in participating in the next survey, please get in touch at info@officedavesharp.com.

Key Insights

- Despite growth in billings, practices reported a widespread contraction in their new project pipeline (both volume and quality) compared to previous quarter.

- Victoria and South Australia faced toughest business conditions.

- Conditions were strong in Queensland, and extremely strong in Western Australia.

- Widespread optimism for improvement in current quarter.

- 11-25 person practices experienced above average business conditions.

- Large practices faced a tough quarter, but are most optimistic about conditions and hiring this quarter.

- Conditions similar across project sectors.

- Construction cost, pipeline and regulatory delays the biggest challenges facing architects.
